Developmental Editing
A developmental edit consists of a comprehensive analysis of the structure, content and style of your writing project. Among other things, I’ll look at how chapters or sections work together, how the central theme or argument develops, and how clearly the language conveys your intended meaning. My feedback is always empathetic and goal-oriented, and will include detailed suggestions that will enable you to move forward with confidence. If there are specific areas of your project that you’d like me to address, I can easily tailor my review to meet your goals.
Book Proposal Development and Consulting
If you want to publish a book, you’ll likely be writing a book proposal. A good proposal outlines your ideas while simultaneously selling them as a marketable package to potential publishers. While the requirements can be daunting (and often vary by press), I will work with you to craft a proposal that will make acquisitions editors take notice. I am also available for consultation during all phases of the publication process.
Writing Coaching
Maybe you want to write more vivid and impactful prose. Perhaps you’d like to explore alternative writing genres or new revision strategies. Or you’d like encouragement to keep you accountable and on schedule. Whether you are looking to build your skills or need strategic guidance, I can work with you to achieve your communications goals.
What to expect
When you work with me you can expect an open and collaborative process. I believe dialogue is key to any successful editing or coaching process and encourage open and frank communication. We will agree on the scope of work before I get started. I will give you honest, encouraging feedback about your work.
Upon completion of an editing project, you will receive a detailed memorandum outlining suggestions for improvement. If you have provided a manuscript, you will also receive an annotated document including comments and suggestions. Typically this will be a Word document edited with the Track Changes function, but I work in other formats as well.
